As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed on March 27, 2020, federal student loans had been placed on administrative forbearance, allowing borrowers to pause payments through September 30, 2020, without accruing interest. The CARES Act includes several provisions that provide additional relief for federal student loan borrowers. These benefits were later extended until the end of 2020, and once again extended through January 31, 2021.
UPDATE 1/21/2021: President Biden has issued an executive order to extend the federal student loan payment suspension through Sept 30, 2021.
Visit the Department of Education website for the updated details of these provisions and what they mean for you.
